How long do I have to setup Duo MFA?

Grace Period for Duo Mobile Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

We ask that new students, staff and faculty activate their Duo accounts the first time they sign into any UAH website that requires single sign-on (SSO) to authenticate. Duo requires either a mobile phone with text (SMS) service, or any compatible Android or Apple device with Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as Apple or Samsung watches, to allow SSO with your Charger account. From the time the Duo account is created, there is a grace period for account-holders to set up MFA:

  • New students have 6 months (180 days) from account creation 
  • New staff and faculty have 6 months (180 days) from account creation

What happens if my MFA isn't set up in time?

Duo accounts are deleted after 180 days of inactivity and/or no enrolled devices. For example, if you have a Duo account but do not enroll for 2 consecutive semesters, after about 6 months of inactivity on the connected Duo account, you will still be able to sign into Google (student Google accounts expire after 3 consecutive un-enrolled semesters), but you may run into the following error message on your device when trying to sign into a UAH site:

If you receive this error message, contact the OIT Help Desk so we can create a new Duo account for you. You can provide us with your mobile phone number, or a wifi-only device such as an iPad or tablet, and we'll send you an activation text or email to enroll your device.
