Why is the email subject showing the word [External]?

Summary

Email messages are, all of a sudden, showing the word External (in square brackets). Why? Can I make it stop?

Body

To call more attention to email messages that originated from outside sources, the term [External] is prepended to the email subject when it is delivered to a @uah.edu address. When viewed in a web browser, Google Mail already displays a colored warning when the sender “is outside your organization.” Adding the External term is an additional step being taken now in an effort to assist those who use a different email viewer or client or those who ignore the banner in Gmail.

OIT encourages you to use extra caution when responding to messages that originated from an external source. Some phishing and spam campaigns can be convincing. Please see the related articles.

Mailing list and email services that have already been designated as trusted will not be affected. Only the appearance of the subject line (not the delivery) of the email message changed on December 15, 2020. There is not a way to stop the display of [External] in the email subject.

If you need assistance, please contact the Help Desk by emailing helpdesk@uah.edu or by calling 256-824-3333.
