File Storage/Sharing Solutions

Summary

OIT supports two file storage/sharing solutions, Windows file shares  and Google shared drives

Body

OIT supports two file sharing solutions, "File Shares"  and "Google Shared Drives"

File Shares, sometimes referred to as Network Drives, store files on UAH premises, on university-owned servers, with multiple off-site backups. If you need to share files subject to confidentiality requirements more stringent than FERPA, file shares are the only OIT-supported solution. File shares do not have a strictly-enforced limit but OIT staff monitor utilization to ensure responsible use. To request a new file share, or changes to an existing one, such as adding or removing authorized users, please submit a request.

Google Shared Drives are located in Google Drive, which stores files in Google cloud storage. These differ slightly from sharing a file as one normally would via Google Drive in that files in a Shared Drive belong to the team instead of an individual. Even if members leave, the files stay exactly where they are so your team can continue to share information and get work done. Google Shared Drives are subject to Google Drive limits of 200 GB for employees and 10 GB for students. To learn more about using Shared Drives, Click Here.
