"Access is denied" error when connecting to crmadvancedb.uah.edu

Summary

Access to crmadvancedb.uah.edu is only permitted for connections originating via the UAH VPN.

Problem: When I try to connect to crmadvancedb.uah.edu using SSMS or another client, the connection times out or I see an error message similar to the one pictured below.

An error dialog that reads "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible, Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5) Additional information: Access is denied."

Cause: Access to crmadvancedb.uah.edu is only permitted for connections originating via the UAH VPN. Even if you are on campus, you must use the VPN to access this resource.

Solution: Follow the steps in KB article 75109 to connect to the UAH VPN and try again.
