Getting Started with Google 2-Step Verification

Overview

Google 2-Step Verification is UAH's solution for multi-factor authentication (MFA) when logging in to Google Workspace services.

All current UAH students, faculty, and staff are required to authenticate with Google 2-Step Verification when accessing Mail, Drive, Calendar, and other Google apps.

Please note that Google 2SV is similar to but separate from Duo, which is UAH's MFA solution for Single Sign-On services.

Get Started With Google 2SV

New student and employee accounts are given a grace period before being required to set up Google 2SV. If Google 2SV is not set up before the end of this grace period, users will be unable to access their account. Learn what to do if you're locked out.

Follow the steps below to set up Google 2-Step Verification,

  1. Sign into your UAH Google account and access your security settings at myaccount.google.com/security

  2. Scroll down to the How you sign in to Google section and click 2-Step Verification

  3. Click Get Started and follow the prompts to finish set up

Help! I'm locked out of my account!

If you receive an error stating "Your sign-in settings don't meet your organisation's 2-Step Verification policy" after logging into your UAH Google account, this means that your grace period for setting up Google 2-Step Verification has already closed.

If you are still signed in to your UAH Google account on at least one of your devices, you may still be able to turn on Google 2-Step Verification.

Still signed in on a mobile app like Gmail or Google Docs?

  1. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner of the app's home screen, then tap
  2. Tap Manage your Google Account
  3. On the Security tab, scroll down to How you sign in to Google
  4. Tap 2-Step Verification, then Turn on 2-Step Verification
  5. Important! Google might turn on only Google prompts by default. This second step only works as long as you're signed in on at least one mobile device. So, when you're signed out of all devices due to a password reset, you'll be locked out. For this reason, we recommend adding your phone number and/or setting up an authenticator app like Duo Mobile as a backup second step.

Still signed in on a web browser?

  1. Visit myaccount.google.com/security
  2. Scroll down to How you sign in to Google
  3.  2-Step Verification, then Turn on 2-Step Verification

Signed out of all devices? If you're signed out of all devices, you'll need to contact the OIT Help Desk to receive a backup code.

After logging in using a backup code from the OIT Help Desk, you may be automatically prompted to enroll in Google 2-Step Verification. If not, follow the steps in the above section Get Started With Google 2SV to enroll.
