Introduction
OIT staff may ask for your MAC and/or IP address when troubleshooting network issues.
A MAC address, also called a hardware address, is a unique set of numbers and letters that identifies your device. Similarly, an IP address is a unique set of numbers that identifies your device's address while connected to the internet.
Your device may have 2 MAC addresses: one for your wired (Ethernet) connection and one for your wireless connection. If you're unsure which MAC to provide to an OIT technician, please provide both addresses.

Steps for Windows OS
To find the MAC and/or IP address of your Windows device, use the built-in ipconfig tool.
- Right-click on your Start Menu and click Run.
- Type cmd.exe into the text field and click OK.
- In the black and white window that opens, type ipconfig /all
- Press the Enter key.
This will generate information about your network connection and your device's network adapters. Adapters that are not in use will have a Media State of Media disconnected.
MAC
- Scroll up to view your Ethernet adapter and Wireless LAN adapter information.
- Your wired & wireless MACs will be listed as the Physical Address in each section.
Alternate Method
If you want to confirm the MAC address, use the command getmac /v. You will see the MAC address for each network adapter in your device.
IP
- Scroll up to view your active Ethernet adapter or Wireless LAN adapter (the adapter that doesn't state Media disconnected).
- Your IP address will be listed as the IPv4 Address
- Note: IP Address may display instead of IPv4 Address
Steps for macOS
You can find the MAC and/or IP address of your Mac device in your device's system settings.
macOS 12 Monterey and earlier
- Open System Preferences.
- Click Network.
- Select the applicable network connection on the left side of the window (eg. Wi-Fi, Ethernet).
- Your IP Address will be listed on the right side of the window.
- To find your MAC address, click Advanced.
- Click Hardware.
- Your MAC Address will be listed below.
macOS 13 Ventura and later
- Open System Settings.
- Click Network.
- Select the applicable network connection on the left side of the window (eg. Wi-Fi, Ethernet).
- Your IP Address will be listed below.
- To find your MAC address, click Details...
- Click Hardware.
- Your MAC Address will be listed at the top of the window.
iOS (iPhone/iPad)
You can find the MAC and/or IP address of your iOS device in your device's system settings.
Note on Private MAC Addresses: iOS (iOS 14+) and Android (Android 10+) use private MAC addresses by default to protect user privacy. If your Wi-Fi status lists a "Private Wi-Fi Address" or "Randomized MAC Address," this temporary address may change and prevent your device from connecting to restricted networks. To find your device's permanent physical MAC address, toggle Private Wi-Fi Address (iOS) or Use Randomized MAC (Android) to Off while connected to the network.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the i icon next to your currently connected network.
- Your MAC address will be listed next to Wi-Fi Address.
- Your IP Address will be listed below.
Android OS
You can find the MAC and/or IP address of your Android device in your device's settings. Please note that both IP and MAC will display "Unavailable" if Wi-Fi is powered off at the time you check for them. See note above regarding private MAC addresses.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap About Phone (or About Device).
- Tap Status Information (on Samsung) or Wi-Fi MAC Address / IP Address (on Pixel/Stock Android).
- Your IP Address and Wi-Fi MAC Address will be listed on this screen. (Note: Wi-Fi must be turned ON for these addresses to display.)
Apple TV
You can find the MAC and/or IP address of your Apple TV device in your device's settings.
- Navigate to the device Settings.
- Select General.
- Select About.
- The IP Address and Ethernet Address should both appear in the list below.
Xbox
You can find the MAC and/or IP address of your Xbox console in your device's settings.
Xbox Series S/X & Xbox One
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system > Settings.
- Under General, select Network settings.
- Select Advanced settings.
- Your IP Address, Wireless MAC, and Wired MAC will be displayed on the screen.
Xbox 360
- Go to My Xbox in the Xbox Dashboard and select System Settings.
- Select Network Settings > Configure Network.
- Select Advanced Settings from the Additional Settings tab.
PlayStation
PlayStation 5
- Open Settings (gear icon in the top right corner).
- Select System > Console Information.
- Your MAC Address (Wi-Fi), MAC Address (LAN Cable), and IP Address will be listed.
PlayStation 4
- Open Settings
- Select Network > View Connection Status.
- Your MAC Addresses and IP Address will be listed here.
Nintendo Switch
- Select System Settings (gear icon) from the HOME Menu.
- Scroll down the left sidebar and select Internet.
- Your System MAC Address will be displayed on the right side of the screen. (Note: If connected to a network, select Test Connection to view your IP address).
Google Home
- Open the Google Home app.
- Select your device from the main home screen.
- Tap the Settings (gear icon) in the top-right corner.
- Tap Device information.
- Your MAC address and IP address will be listed at the bottom of the screen.
Note: If the device is not yet set up on the network, start the setup process in the Google Home app. When you reach the Wi-Fi connection step, tap the Settings (gear icon) or the menu button in the top-right corner to view the MAC address.
Other Devices
For any other devices that are supported on our network, you will generally be able to find the MAC and IP Address in the device Settings. Look for sections labeled Network or About to find the MAC or IP address.

Fun fact: the MAC acronym represents Media Access Control and is unrelated to the Mac/Macintosh family of Apple computers.
