How long do I have to setup Google 2FA?

Grace Period for Google 2-factor Authentication (2FV)

We ask that new students, staff and faculty sign into their Google accounts with their @uah.edu email address, and set up Google 2-factor verification as soon as they are accepted or onboarded. The first time you sign in, you will be prompted to enroll in 2FV by adding a recovery email and phone number to your UAH Gmail account. From the time the account is created, there is a grace period for account-holders to enroll:

  • New students have 1 month (30 days) from account creation
  • New staff and faculty have 2 weeks (14 days) from account creation

What happens if my 2FV isn't set up in time?

Google accounts without 2-factor verification turned on, or with no enrolled methods of 2-factor verification will give users the following error message:
“Couldn’t sign you in”: “Your sign-in settings don’t meet your organization’s 2-Step Verification policy. Contact your admin for more info", as seen in the screenshot below:

If you receive this error message, contact the OIT Help Desk so we can provide you backup codes needed to access your Google account. Once we provide the backup codes, you will be prompted to enroll a phone number and personal email address as recovery methods to get back into your account.

Cause

Our administrators have Google 2-factor authentication enabled to ensure secure access to UAH student, staff and faculty resources in our Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Calendar and more), in addition to Duo Mobile MFA. See our article for more information about Duo: https://uah.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/2075/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=67279
