How to Find Your Computer Name

Introduction

OIT Help Desk staff may ask for your computer name in order to troubleshoot issues with your computer. This may also be referred to as the "device name" or "hostname."

Steps for Windows

Follow the steps below to find your computer name on a Windows computer.

Windows 11

  1. Open the Settings app on your computer
  2. Under System, your computer name will be displayed

Windows 10

  1. Open the Settings app on your computer
  2. Click System
  3. Click About
  4. Near the top of the About screen, you should see your Device name listed

Alternative Steps

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Click File Explorer
  3. Right-click on This PC
  4. Select Properties
  5. Near the top of the About screen that opens, you should see your Device name listed

Steps for Mac

Follow the steps below to find your computer name on a macOS computer.

macOS Ventura (13) and Later

  1. Open the Apple menu and select System Settings...
  2. Select the General tab, then About
  3. Your computer Name will be displayed here, along with your Serial number, macOS version, and other information about your device

macOS Monterey (12) and Earlier

  1. Click the Apple menu
  2. Click System Preferences
  3. Click Sharing
  4. The computer name for your Mac appears at the top of your Sharing preferences
