In some cases, it's desirable for a device to have an IP address reserved for its use. For instance, this can be convenient when a device offers a network service, or when an entry in the Domain Name System (DNS) needs to be created for the device.
IP addresses are reserved at UAH by completing a Network Access Request Form (NARF). Even if a NARF would not normally be required, completing the form ensures that the IP address will be reserved for this device's use only. Whenever possible, IP address reservations stay in place until the reservation is not used for 1 year.
I've been instructed to obtain a "static IP address" for a device. Can OIT help with this?
No. Static IP addressing is not supported at UAH. This term refers to configuring an IP address directly on a given device. This does result in an unchanging IP address, but it also "locks" various settings on the device (such as subnet mask, name servers, gateway location, and others), so that OIT can't remotely assign them. These parameters must change from time to time during the operation of the UAH network; therefore, assigning a static address will cause the device to lose network access without notice.
You should always configure your device to utilize the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) or Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC) to obtain an address. Then, obtain a reserved address by filling out the NARF. OIT will use the DHCP or SLAAC protocols to automatically configure the device with the reserved address.
If the supplier or administrator of the device is not familiar with this process and has further questions or concerns, please contact the OIT Help Desk for further assistance.
