Transfer Your UAH Google Account Data With Google Takeout Transfer

Google Takeout Transfer is a solution offered by Google to copy and transfer data directly from your UAH Google Account to a personal Google Account. The data that can be transferred includes:

  • Gmail (All mail)
  • Drive (My Drive files & Files you own)

Note: Shared-with-me file exports will no longer be supported beginning early 2024. In order to export files shared with you, you will need to make a copy of those shared files in your personal Drive account.

Before you begin

Please review the following information before initiating a transfer:

  • The destination account must be a personal Google Account (@gmail.com).
  • Before transferring, ensure that you have enough storage available in the destination account. To check how much data you have used out of your UAH account and how much storage space is left in your personal account, visit drive.google.com/settings/storage.
    • If your destination account runs out of space before the transfer is complete, files will stop transferring and you may receive an error message that there was a problem with your Google content transfer.
  • The original files stay in your school account. Any changes you make to the copied files don't affect the originals.
  • Once the transfer process begins, it cannot be stopped.

Begin the transfer

Follow the steps below to begin the copy/transfer process:

  1. On your UAH account, go to takeout.google.com/transfer.
  2. Enter the email address of the Google Account where you want to copy your content and select Get code.
  3. On the destination Google Account, check your Gmail inbox for a confirmation email from Google. In the email, select Get confirmation code. A new tab will open with a code.
  4. On your UAH account, go back to the "Transfer your content" page. Enter the code, then choose Verify.
  5. Choose the content you'd like to copy, then select Start transfer.

The copy process usually happens within a few hours, but it can take up to a week. To see your transferred content:

  • Gmail: Copied content will have a label with the date you started the copy process.
  • Drive: Copied content will be in a folder labeled with your school account name and the date you started the copy process.

Error: "Transfer Your Content is only available to authorized G Suite for Education Accounts..."

When trying to initiate a data transfer using Google Takeout Transfer, users may receive an error stating "Transfer Your Content is only available to authorized G Suite for Education Accounts. Please contact your administrator, or sign in with another Google Account."

This can happen when you are logged into your personal Google account in the same browser where you are trying to initiate the transfer. This is especially true if you are using Chrome and are signed in to your personal account profile.

If you are experiencing this error, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Close your browser completely.
  2. Open a new private/incognito browser.
  3. Go to http://takeout.google.com/transfer and sign in to your @uah.edu or @alumni.uah.edu account.
  4. As part of the transfer process, you'll need to sign in to your personal @gmail.com account to retrieve a code. Do not do this in the same browser window where you are signed in to your UAH account. Instead, sign into your personal account in a regular (not private/incognito) version of your browser, on a completely different browser, or on a separate device.
