Why is the email subject showing the word [External]?

An email change was made on December 15, 2020:

To call more attention to email messages that originated from outside sources, the term [External] is prepended to the email subject when it is delivered to a @uah.edu address. When viewed in a web browser, Google Mail already displays a colored warning when the sender “is outside your organization.” Adding the External term is an additional step being taken now in an effort to assist those who use a different email viewer or client or those who ignore the banner in Gmail.

Mailing list and email services that have already been designated as trusted will not be affected. Only the appearance of the subject line (not the delivery) of the email message changed on December 15, 2020.

On February 12, 2020 at 9 AM, OIT staff began testing this subject tagging. Between February and December, many services were identified that were designated as trusted.

There is not a way to stop the display of [External] in the email subject.
