Overview
Google Groups, part of the Google Workspace suite, allows UAH departments, teams, and organizations to collaborate and communicate effectively.
In additional to email communication, Groups allow you to more easily share Google Drive files, Calendar invites, and more with a group of people at one time.
Types of Groups
Generally, Groups fall into one of the following categories.
Mailing List
Mailing lists are most appropriate for sending one-way messages, such as announcements, to a group of people.
Mailing lists have the following characteristics:
- Messages sent to the group are delivered to all group members
- Only Managers can send messages to the group
- Members are not able to reply to messages OR members are only able to reply to the sender directly, not to the whole group
Discussion Board
Discussion boards are most appropriate for forum-style group discussions.
Discussion boards have the following characteristics:
- Any group member can send messages to the group to start a discussion thread
- Any group member can reply to any discussion thread
Collaborative Inbox
Collaborative inboxes are most appropriate for teams who want to collaboratively manage a central email inbox.
These types of Groups take advantage of Google's Collaborative Inbox feature, which allows Group members to take responsibility for conversations and mark each conversation as complete, duplicate, or no action needed.
